WHY CAN'T YOU JUST GIVE ME THE MEDICINES MY PET NEEDS?

This is probably the one question every veterinarian hates the most. It most often comes from pet owners sure they know (exactly and for sure) what their pet has wrong and exactly what will work, or from someone who just doesn't want to spend any money on their pet. Let us help you understand why this can't be done.

1. Firstly, it is illegal and unethical to dispense medications without a proper doctor-patient relationship. In other words, if we don't examine the pet for that specific problem, we will break the law if we dispense prescription medication.

2. Second, how in the world can the doctor even know what medication an animal needs without examination and proper tests when indicated. I like to ask clients who are on the phone, "What color is my shirt?" Invariably they say, "How should I know! I can't see you!" So if I cannot see your pet, how can I know what is wrong.

3. People often assume that from the symptoms they describe it is so easy to make a diagnosis. There are over 50 skin diseases which have the symptoms of itching and hair loss, over 50 gastrointestinal diseases which cause vomiting and diarrhea, over 30 causes for seizures and so on.

4. If you know exactly what is wrong with your pet, why are you calling the vet? If you are able to figure this out, you must have passed all the dozens of courses in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, surgery and diagnosis and have the same degree I do, which means you are running your own clinic so why do you need drugs from me?

5. Lastly, if I dispense medication and your pet gets better, fine. But what if your pet dies from that being the wrong medication. Right! 9 out of 10 clients with dead pets are willing to sue or otherwise complain because of mis-diagnosis, negligence and malpractice. That certainly adds little incentive to this discussion.

Owning a pet is a privilege, not a right. That privilege carries with it the responsibility for proper care, including proper veterinary care. If you cannot afford or do not have the time, please wait to own a pet.
